LED Technology Rapidly Improving Smart Lighting
LED technology has improved greatly and production has increased over the past few years. As a result, we have seen the prices of LED Lighting products decrease significantly. Some of the most exciting developments in LED lighting are of the smart lighting category. Smart lighting technology is on/off/dimmed automatically triggered under certain conditions, or controllable, offering savings that come off the ongoing electricity cost rather than the up-front purchase cost of the product.
Many estimates suggest that lighting as a whole accounts for about one-fifth of global electricity consumption, and LED-based lighting has had a major impact on that figure. LED technology has improved greatly over the past few years compared to traditional lighting. A typical 60-Watt incandescent lamp produces only 16 lumens of light output per Watt with useful lifetimes of 1,000 hours on average, while a halogen incandescent lamp produces closer to 20 lumens per Watt. The equivalent CFL provides about 67 lumens per Watt and lasts 10 times as long.
LED lamps are even more efficient, currently producing around 83 lumens per Watt with a life expectancy of more than 30 times as long as a comparable incandescent lamp. LED lighting technologies have been improving rapidly with many experts projecting further improvements which will result in lower cost, increased reliability, and further reduction in energy consumption. By 2020, EIA projects LEDs to produce more than 150 lumens per Watt.
